You Don’t Have to Earn Your Rest

Today, I woke up with a cold.

Usually, when we feel sick, a first instinct is to negotiate. We feel obligated to be productive before we allow ourselves to fully sit still and rest.

A few thoughts I had this morning were:

  • “I don’t feel that bad. I can do a load or two of laundry.”
  • “I’ll just wash the dishes and take out the trash, then I can nap.”

And my worst thought-

“I need to eat and rest well so I’m able to go into work tomorrow.”

That last thought made me pause. Why would I prioritize my wellbeing just so I can go into work tomorrow?

Maybe you have thought something similar when you were sick.

When we prioritize work over our own comfort, we’re saying the work is more important than the body doing it. This shouldn’t be the case.

There is nothing wrong with catching a cold.

If I’m going to be sick, I will be peacefully sick rather than anxiously sick.

So, the chores can wait. The phone is on “Do not disturb”. I’m going to play my Nintendo Switch in bed, drink water, and let my body do what it knows how to do.

See you next week-
